Healthy Tips Podcast #23: Get Your Mojo Back

Did you know that many of the health issues that plague our society today are directly associated with eating too much processed, vitamin and mineral deficient foods that are high in calorie? I know that last sentence was hard to digest, so I will break it down for you. Empty calories are very unhealthy because they are high in calories and low in nutrients.

I’ve mentioned this before but it needs reminding to many of us, in this rush-rush society we have been indoctrinated to believe that fast is good. By fast I mean, fast foods, drive-thru’s, quick get rich schemes and the list goes on and on. So, today I want to focus on our diets that are leading to obesity and the never-ending dieting cycle. To eliminate the empty calories from our diets we must be first aware that we are eating them. Empty calories refers to food that have little to no nutritional value, yet still contains many calories. Some examples of empty calorie foods are cakes, pies, beer, soft drinks, candy and many processed snacks.

In order to maintain optimal health, you body needs 40 essential nutrients as well as a certain amount of calories each day. If you ingest more calories than your body needs then the weight gain occurs. But if you do not include enough calories, you can suffer from malnutrition and other ailments associated with it.

So, how do you eliminate empty calories? First off, I don’t want you to go crazy and try to change your diet overnight. You can begin by slowly switching from empty calorie foods to nutrient filled foods. Try to eliminate deep-fried foods, as well as foods with high levels of sugar and white flour. Your best friends will be fruits and vegetables and they are absolutely critical to good health. You can begin by eating familiar foods such as cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes as well as oranges, bananas and berries. Fruits can easily satisfy a sweet tooth without jeopardizing your waistline and overall health.

Drink more water instead of the sugar filled soft drinks and if that is difficult try alternating water with soft drinks. It is important to remember that you should drink 6-8 glasses of water a day and soft drinks don’t count. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as well. Studies have shown that breakfast eaters are less likely to choose high-calorie junk foods throughout the day as opposed to those who skip breakfast.

It’s not easy to change your dietary habits, but being aware of them will help in the process. Begin by making a list of all the food items you eat and look at what types of foods you are eating. You will be surprised at how many of those are empty calories. Make the change today; your body will love you for it.
